Photography

my flickr photostream

I am very much an amateur when it comes to taking photos. I know that if I like the look of something, how an object or landscape is composed, I feel its often a shame not to take a photo of it. I had never really used film until recently, in fact the advent of digital cameras brought me to towards using film, which I find a little ironic. I don’t have a particularly fancy film camera- just an old Russian Fed 5, which is probably about 25 years old. It’s very unpredictable but thats the beauty of it. On the digital side, my first camera was a great little Fuji finepix 4800. I then passed that on to my dad and got a Canon Powershot G5, which took great pictures but was just too big for me to wield on a regular basis. Now I have a Panasonic Lumix FX-8, which is small and packed with features- yet I still yearn for a Digital SLR!

Geotagging Photos

More recently, when travelling I have tried to take along a small gps device and then add metadata to my photos as to the location they are taken. Flickr also allows you to add your photos to a map by hand. The resulting effort means that you can see a map of all the photos I have taken with location info…

I am going to write up an article in the near future on geotagging photos using a gps and/or google earth on the Mac. I posted a brief photoset on flickr about what can be accomplished with a cheap gps device and 5 minutes on your Mac when you get back home. Look out for a post on my geotagging workflow soon.

For windows users though, I highly recommend checking out Picasa from Google. It integrates your photos into Google Earth seamlessly.

All the panorama’s below have been stiched by hand using photoshop, or with some propriety canon software provided with my Camera and then retouched.
